sql server reporting services: "Technically" that isnt true. You can install just the server portion
of Sql Reporting Services without the report designer support.

Here is the Trial software download link:
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/reporting/productinfo/trial.mspx

Afterwards, you could develop your reports in Notepad or any XML Editor
and upload them via the built-in ReportManager website.

Much of this approach to report development is rather masochistic, so I
wouldnt recommend it. Also, you will miss-out on much of the power of
Sql Reporting Services since its the ease of report development that
really makes it so valuable.

However, if you had to, you could even use a 3rd-party class-library to
programmatically create the RDL such as the library from:
http://www.rdlcomponents.com/

Hope this helps...

No. You need some version of VS (the cheapest is VB.Net). This will not be a
requirement for RS 2005.

Can you download and try Reporting Services without having a copy of Visual
Studio 2003?

Thanks,

"Technically" true. I sure wouldn't want to create the rdl by hand and for
all practical purposes you have to have VS.Net 2003.
