SQL Reporting services (2005) versus Crystal Mike

sql server reporting services: I was wondering if SQL Reporting services is a viable replacement for Crystal
Reports? We currently use Crystal Reports 11 with our application and
distribute the runtime files to our customers. Over have of our customers use
MSDE instead of the full licensed copy of SQL. For our next version, we are
moving to SQL 2005 and are wondering if SQL Reporting services would work for
us. For the customers running SQL Express 2005, what kind of limitations
would this create? Your opinions and thoughts are much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

you can use Reporting Services with SQL Express I believe; but I
believe that it's referring to a RDLC instead of the ReportServer
interface.

I would reccomend just sticking with Crystal; Microsoft SQL Server
Reporting Services is too buggy for real world use.

There are two versions of Express so they would need to get the version with
RS. Also, this version of RS only reports against local data. So if the data
is in Express then no problem but they can't use it to report against data
on a different server.

So if all there data is on that instance of SQL Express, all workstations on
the network can use report on the data? All of our clients have one database
and it is on just one instance of SQL. Are you telling me just the machine
with the instance can report on the data?

Have a look at integrating the ReportViewer control within your application.
Get the data and pass the dataset to the ReportViewer control and let it
render the report for you.

You can check out Brian Weckler demonstrating it at

I thought that the SQL Express edition didn't come with Report
Manager????

I thought that it only support RDLC
I could never get Report Manager setup correctly; and I formatted a
couple of times wiht a couple of different operating systems; no luck

Seems to me that if the data is in SQL Express then all the workstations can
use the report on the data via Report Manager. You have to use integrated
security (not forms based). That is my interpretation of the following
feature matrix:

Susie understands that... she's sitting right here a cubicle down from

does the version of Express that 'comes with RS' come with a web

I sure didn't get a reports or reportServer interface.. or
ReportManager interface.. I didn't have jack shit from using that Sql
2005 Express with Reporting Services.. i figured it came with
libraries; but not the web interface.

Is it supposed to come with the web interface??

There are two versions of SQL Express. One with RS and one without.

I got caught in this trap. One SQL Express advanced version download does come with Reporting Services alright, BUT, you then have to purchase the Business Inteligence module. I even called Microsoft thinking it was a mistake. If you plan on using Visual Studio to do the developement you'll be purchasing the Standard SQL 2005 version.
