Converting from Crystal to SQL Server Report Services

sql server reporting services:
there are some companies who can do this pretty inexpensively.

I don't think there is a free tool (yet) that can do it. Examine other
options though before putting all of your eggs in the RS basket. I was a
huge fan at first but continue to be disappointed.

Due to lisencing issues and the fact that crystal is a CPU/memory hog
(mainly the latter), we are looking to convert to SQL Server Reporting
Services. We have two issues to address:

1. Converting all existing crystal reports to SQL Server Reports
Does anyone know of a tool that does this, or do we just start from
scratch with each report?

2. We need business users to be able to continue to be able to desing
reports, but we do not want to install VS.Net for each of them.
Is there a stand alone tool for developing SQL Server Reports, that does
not require VS.Net?

Any advice would be much apreciated.

RS might be as much a CPU/memory hog, I don't know. I have heard of people
that have done lots of Crystal reports but I think it is more of a redesign
rather than a convert.

RS 2005 comes with an end user tool that does not require VS called Report
Builder. I suggest checking out the documentation on the MS web site about
that and see if it meets your needs.

If you approach the matter as wanting to have RS do exactly what Crystal
does then you will be disappointed. If you want to be able to design and
keep the same techniques then you will be disappointed. How you design and
solve problems is different. Some things that are easy in Crystal is hard to
do in RS and vice versa.

Another big issue is whether you will be using the portal that ships with RS
(report manager) or it you will be integrating with your own web app. With
RS 2003 this was harder than Crystal. VS 2005 ships with two new controls
for RS 2005 that make integration with your own apps much much easier.

Could you elaborate on the shortcomings of RS? This is a directive coming
from higher up, and I want to make sure we know what to expect going
forward.

Thanks for the advice so far. Someone else was able to track down a free
(more or less open source) report designer that works with 2000 and 2005,
where as report builder appears to only be for 2005. Since we are on 200
atm, this seems like it may be a valid option.

Here is the link, in case anyone is curious.

We are still looking into other options.

Thanks,
We dont need it to work just like crystal. Personally, I would not want it
to. Some folks (mainly IT) will require some retraining, while others will
be trained on this as their first report design tool, so the differences
should not be too bad.

Thanks for the link. It sounds like they charge $25 per report, which is
pretty cheap, although they offer a service rather than an application. We
will need to look into that.

If your users desire to create their own reports without having to bother IT
all the time, then I suggest you look at Report Builder in depth. This one
tool alone is worth the price of admission with SQL 2005.

Actually everything in 2005 is just better than 2000.

My $0.02 worth.

Hi. I run the website RptToRdl.Com (we used to be known as RptToSQL.Com), a service that converts reports from Crystal Reports into Reporting Services. At this time, we only charge $25 per report. We are a recommended ISV from Microsoft now for converting your RPT templates into RDLs.
