RS 2000 needs VS 2003, it will not work with VS 2005.
RS 2005 comes with a version of VS so you do not have to purchase VS 2005
unless you want the new controls for integrating with 2.0 framework winforms
or asp.net pages. Those new controls ship with VS 2005. Also, if you want to
create custom assemblies then you need to purchase something like VB.Net or
C# in order to do so. But to create reports, code behind reports etc RS 2005
comes with everything needed.
RS 2005 is not backward compatible. If you need to create reports for both
then you need both report designer installed.
RS 2005 can use SQL Server 2000 database for its object/metadata storage.
However, any box that you have RS 2005 installed needs a SQL Server 2005
license.
