sql server reporting services: following up on a post from the setup forum.
that post concerned putting ss2000 and ss2005 on the same server, i found
out that was fine, which brings me to my next question.

would it be ill conceived to also run reporting services 2005 on this
cluster?

i would like to reuse the ss licensing and i don't expect much demand from
the
reporting services users. there will be some early adopters,
as time goes on it may expand, but that remains to be seen.

i don't really want to put new servers in place, and buy more licensing for
a handful of reports.

thanks

Hi Jason,

First, I would like to correct one thing. Reporting Services does not
support Failover cluster.

Although you could setup two Web-Front End Reporting Services site to work
as a Web Server Farm and connect to the same remote SQL Server as the
Report Server database, you could not Failover to another node in the
cluster.

As for the license issue, you will need two valid licenses of SQL Server
2005 Enterprise Edition for the computers running the Report Server, plus
another valid license of SQL Server 2005 for the computer running the
Report Server Database.

Hope this will be helpful!

Sincerely,

Wei Lu

Hello Wei,

thanks for you response.

Could i host just the database part of report server on a cluster, or are
you saying no part of SSRS is supported on a clustered envirnment?

on licensing, do i have the correct: if i put all of the SSRS components on
1 server, i'd just need that 1 license, but if i put the database on a server
and the iis piece on another i'd need 2 licenses.

thanks.

Hello Jason,

You could put the Report Server database on the Cluster environment.

As for the license issue, yes, you need only one license if you put all the
component on the same server and if you put the reporting services and
report server database on the different server, you will need 2 license.

Hope this information will be helpful!
