I need Visual Studio to debug SQL stored procedures and already have
SQL Server 2005, which comes with that pared down version. Do I need a
full version or an upgrade? Do I need Standard Edition or Enterprise
Edition?

SQL Server comes with a version of VS that is just for designing reports.
You need to purchase VS (or a product that uses it like VB.Net 2005).
Usually VB.Net is the least expensive way to do this. I suggest looking on
the MS site and see which version of VB.Net supports debugging stored
procedures. VB.Net is handy to have around for developing reports as well.

Okay, I'm still confused. I know I need more VS but how much more...

Standard edition or enterprise?

Can I buy the upgrade or do I need a full edition when installing on a
machine that has SQL Server and the very lite version of VS?

I don't think you can do an upgrade since this is not officially a version
of Visual Studio. As far as what version. This shows the different version
of Visual Studio and the features.

Used to be there were multiple versions of VB.Net, I don't know if that is
true anymore. I would ask in one of the VB.net newsgroups. Or in the SQL
Server development newsgroup. I don't know what is the cheapest way to get
stored procedure debugging.
