Does anyone have a good recomendation for a code
profiling tool that works with .Net? I'm trying to
squeeze out better performance on a web app and would
like to use a profiling too.

thanks,
john

Sounds like this will be an interesting book. When do you expect to have it
published?

I've just done an evaluation of a few of those, and here's what I
found:

1) Borland OptimizeIt - didn't particularly like it, didn't feel
"good", didn't really seem to show what I was looking for, works only
for .NET framework 1.1 (and we still have lots of 1.0 stuff), and it's
rather expensive at $699

2) Intel VTune - same price, $699, but it appears from their web site
that even though they support .NET, it's only for managed C++ and
doesn't know anything about C# or VB.NET.

3) Red-gate ANTS Profiler (www.red-gate.com) - quite simple, and quite
easy to use - but in some cases it would appear to be almost a bit too
simple. $299 for a license - for that price, it offers too little for
me (e.g. hardly any output capability - can't seem to save reports in
HTML or PDF)

4) And now for the winner: AutomatedQA's "AQTime .NET Edition".

I really liked this profiler, it feels very intuitive, offers a broad
range of profiling options, very detailed output, exports results to a
range of formats, and just feel "right" overall. At $349.99 it's
reasonable in price, and it "just works" - highly recommended.

In addition to Marc's suggestion, I personally prefer the CompuWare
Devpartner Profiler [1]. For a non-distributed app, this profiler is great,
and its free.

Hopefully round October. We are in the final stages of post-production, so
(hopefully) it shouldn't be too much longer.

Microsoft has a great CLR Profiler, which you can download from

Nick, that's an amazing profiler. Didn't know it is from Numega. The paid
version is expensive, but bound to be worth it. Thanks. Looking forward to
your forthcoming book too.
A Joshi
