It's important because of where the code would run. If the device needs to
know it's own IP that's totally different than if the PC needs to know.

You need it on the PC. It's simplest to just use the PPP_PEER host name.

I need a way to know the IP of the device. why is it importent who wants to
know?
I have to set this IP in a program that is running on the desktop.
