dotnet academic : Need Help Installing Visual Studio

Lester Oliver

I bought the Academic version of Visual Studio and wanted to load it on my computer. This computer is hooked up in a peer-to-peer network. My internet access in on the second computer. I tried to load the package and it keeps failing with a message tht it cannot update the Config.msi file. I don't know where this file comes from. Is there someone who has been able to install this package on a computer without a modem?

Lester,

I don't think your network setup is the problem. Can you access the Internet
from your computer under normal circumstances?

Hello, Lester.
I second Bill's opinion.
I just rebuilt a PC that's in my office as a standalone. No modem or network
connection at all. I had no issues installing Visual Studio.NET Professional
Edition on that PC.
I understand that the Academic Edition of Visual Studio .NET 2003 (if you
have 2003) *will* have to be activated after installation, but that should
not interfere with installation.
The file name, Config.msi, sounds like the configuration file for the
Microsoft Windows Installer. What version of Windows are you running, and is
it patched to the latest Service Pack level?
You might also try going to Microsoft downloads and getting the latest
installer for your Windows.

Further, your use of the phrase "peer-to-peer network" prompts another
possibility. Are you, by any chance, running Windows 98 or Windows ME? If
so, you'll need to upgrade your OS to install and use Visual Studio .NET.
You'll need either Windows 2000 Professional Edition, or some flavor of
Windows XP (Professional Edition strongly recommended for full Visual Studio
functionality, over the Home Edition).

familiar with Microsoft Windows Installer. Do you know what option I need
to run in order to activate this funciton?

There is no option, but from your description it seems that your installer
may have a problem. Which service pack level on Win 2000? If it's not the
latest, this may help:

Lester,

Config.msi is an installer program. It likely is on the CD you have for
Visual Studio. Do you have Administrator privileges on the computer you are
trying to install VS on?

As our ideas have failed (thus far) to rectify your situation, it's time for
details.
Please tell us which version of the Academic Edition you are trying to
install (2002 or 2003), and exactly when the failure occurs (which CD is in
your drive when you get the message about config.msi). Also, if you could
provide the exact text of the message that is displayed, including any error
numbers (if displayed). I realize it's a pain to have to report all this
stuff, but it may well help us reach a solution.
FWIW, if you have the 2003 version, I seem to recall a requirement or
recommendation for SP4 with Windows 2000 when we went to VS.NET 2003 in our
labs and classrooms. It's grasping at a straw, but you might want to try
that.

The version of Academic studio.net that I am trying to load is version 2003. The failure occurs when it is trying to load FrontPage. The text that it gives is "The following components failed to install" "Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Web Extension Client". According to the readme file, you can run this in stand alone by executing Weccom.msi. When I run this I get the message "Error 1926" "Could not set file security for this file c:\Config.msi\" Error 5. Verify that you have sufficient priviliges to modify the security permissions for this file. I try to find the file and it is not there. I have read the documentation that was delivered with this package and it requires SP3. If it requires SP4, I will try to load that. I will have to download that file before attempting to update Windows.

Lester,

This could be due to the fact that your system does not have sufficient
free space for temporary files. How much free space do you have?

Also, there is a knowledgebase article describing the situation you might
want to check out at

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;305560

Let us know what you find out.

Lester,

I agree with your reluctance to edit the registry. You have a difficult
problem. Is there any chance you could try to install VS on a friends
computer just to see if the problem is machine specific. I am beginning to
wonder if the installation files are corrupt.

In answer to your first question, I have 6 gig. of free disk space. I allow
windows to create the temp file so it can use whatever it needs. In regards
to the second part, I have done the deletes that this article suggest. This
did not resolve the problem. I aam not sure that I should do the registry
work because the article is talking about another file 'c:\inetpub\wwwroot".
I am not sure that this solution would help me in my problem and would not
like to chance editing the registry unless I am sure that it would help.

Lester,

Have you tried disconnecting from your network and doing the install?
