There is an Academic Edition of Visual Studio .NET 2003, which includes
Visual Basic .NET, and there is a Visual Basic .NET 2003 Standard Edition
available in the US at academic prices. If you are located outside the US,
your experience may differ.
There are several web stores that sell "academically priced" software. Two
that come to mind are:
www.provantage.com and
www.genesis-technologies.com Provantage has somewhat better prices. Visual Studio .NET 2003 AE goes for
$90 - $100 and Visual Basic .NET Standard is ~ $65.
That said, have you asked at your school if they are aware of the MSDN
Academic Alliance program? If not they may want to look into it at:
http://www.msdnaa.net The program provides for *free* distribution of software such as operating
systems and development tools to students and faculty after the member
department pays a modest annual membership fee.
Many textbooks are now shipping with free .NET development tools for the
subject language. You might find it less expensive to buy a book with the
free software included. Publishers I know of who are now participating
include Thompson Learning and Pearson Education.
