I have written an application in visual C++ 6.0. Is it a lot of trouble to
port that application to Visual Studio.Net.

Your ability to port from VS 6 to VS.NET (I assume we're talking about 2003)
will depend on the project type and code you wrote. You should be able to
put you entire VS 6 project folder on a PC with VS.NET 2003, then
double-click on the workspace file (.dsw) to get the project converted. My
classroom demo (read simple) MFC projects all ported with no manual
intervention required.
Yes, VS 6 and Visual Studio .NET 2003 (or 2002, for that matter) can coexist
on the same PC. The only glitch you may encounter is trying to install VS 6
on a Win XP SP2 machine. People have reported having to uninstall SP2,
install VS 6 then reinstall SP2.
