dotnet academic:
I have managed to install a Win2003 server running SQL Server2000 and IIS
6.0. The server has a DNS name and is accessible to students from campus
labs. These students need to do the following actions from their home
computers(all these actions work great on campus network).
1. Using Visual Studio, add a connection to the SQL server
2. Using Visual Studio, create web applications
3. Using WebDav, upload student web pages created with Dreamweaver

My system administrator wants me to find out what ports should be opened in
the external firewall to allow students access to this machine.

Can anyone answer this question or direct me to resources that I might study
to glean the answer?

Use a VPN connection:

I had a similar situation. I run some servers that I maintain when at home
via Remote Desktop (Terminal Server). Recently the University IT people
changed the firewall so that only specific ports on specific machines were
availale oustide. In the main only port 80 (ie webserver) is all they will
open.

They have implemented a VPN client for the university that solves this. The
client comes full configured and installs as an desktop app. (Nortel). This
then enables staff and students to VPN from home and get to University
resources as if they are at University.

The IT managers prefer this rather than having random ports/machines open,
and I am quite satisfied with it.
