dotnet academic: I ran into a situation where someone could not install the MSDE (prelude to
my package). According to them there copy of Windows was pirated. Is
there a method to check the legitimacy of a Windows OS before installing a
package? It sure would save support time and effort if one were available.

If there was any way to do that, Microsoft would not publish it, since that
would give away how to subvert it!

True, but I think there is more to this. I understand your thoughts on
this, but I think there is something more here. Probably something very
simple.

Ah, this does it. What I need is a way to have the customer discover if
they have a legitimate copy or not. Sometimes that is difficult if they
believe the person they bought it from is honest. This is a great
reference. Thanks Elp.

run the test and this will tell you if you have a genuine or a pirated
version of windows. Now, what happens if it turns out that you have a
