can't build asp.net project after building once (trouble with ISS) Dean Stanton

dotnet academic:
I am a student and am studying vb.Net. I have a test comming up, so this will
be rather basic for everyone here. Once I create an asp.net project ( very
basic, blank .aspx ) and test it it works and deplays the blank aspx in ie.

I close ie and return to the ide. If I do not restart IIS through the snap
in I can not test my blank page again.

if I press the build button ie comes up and it finds my page through the
local host, and then says it is waiting for a reply from the server. Then the
system seems to hang.

I can do anything else except things to do with ISS, if I try to ping local
host through the comand propt it hangs for example, it won't let me close the
ide and it won't let me shutdown the computer. I can't even press
ctr-alt-delete.

this problem isn't just with vb.net ide. if I ping local host once it works,
if I try and ping local host again all the above happens again.

please can someone help with what I need to change in IIS to make this work
as it makes life very difficult to study for my test.

Thank you very much for any help

Has IIS ever worked correctly for you? If not, I suspect a flawed install,
and suggest that you uninstall, then reinstall IIS. Afrer you do that, you'l
need to remap Visual Studio and .NET to IIS by either:
1) Uninstalling and reinstalling the .NET Framework, or
2) Following the instructions in Microsoft Knowledge Base Article #306005,
pertinent part below:
"
After you install the Microsoft .NET Framework SoftwareDevelopment Kit (SDK)
or Visual Studio .NET, Microsoft Internet Information Service (IIS) mappings
are created to associate the new file extensions and settings for ASP.NET.
If you did not have IIS installed when you ran the SDK or Visual Studio
Setup, or if you uninstalled and reinstalled IIS after you ran the SDK or
Visual Studio Setup, those settings will not be in place. You experience
unexpected behavior when you try to view ASP.NET pages.

When you try to create a new ASP.NET Web application in Visual Studio .NET
2003, you receive the following error message:

Visual Studio .NET has detected that the specified Web server is not running
ASP.NET version 1.1. You will be unable to run ASP.NET Web applications or
services.

MORE INFORMATION
To fix IIS mappings for ASP.NET, follow these steps:

Run the Aspnet_regiis.exe utility:

Click Start, and then click Run.

In the Open text box, type cmd, and then press ENTER. At the command
prompt, type the following, and then press ENTER:

"%windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\version\aspnet_regiis.exe" -i

In this path, version represents the version number of the .NET Framework
that you installed on your server. You must replace this placeholder with
the actual version number when you type the command.

Register the Aspnet_isapi.dll:

Click Start, and then click Run.

In the Open text box, type the following, and then press ENTER:

regsvr32 %windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\version\aspnet_isapi.dll

Regsvr32 returns the results of the registration."

Thanks heaps for your time Peter.

I got that version error message originaly, I kind of got that I needed to
install vb after setting up iis.
so I re-installed vb after reinstalling iis. Once I did that when I tryed
to set up a asp app the image of the globe connecting to the server came up
and I am able to create the asp app.

the problem I am having occurs now after doing the other.

I tried to type in your commands and the cmp but just got that the path does
not exits. where you had version I entered 1.1.

I figured out that if after building my project I restart iis every time
then it will work again. but this is not the way it should be.

thankyou again for your help, sorry if my basic knoweledge is frustrating :-)
more suggestions would be appreciated heaps

The version folder will be named something like: v1.1.4322. Use Windows
Explorer to find it and then type in the commands using what you find. I
believe those commands, properly entered and executed, may help your
situation.
