Can I install VS.Net 2002 on XP SP2? (using which .NET framework?) -- dotnet academic

I ask for two reasons:
1. in a previous exchange, Peter van der Goes asked (without reply) "did you
get it installed successfully? Some people *do* have difficulties installing
Visual Studio .NET 2003 with XP SP2 installed." I assume that the situation
for 2002 can't be any BETTER than 2003 ...
2. When I began installing, I noted that Component Update wanted to install
..NET Framework even though I had 1.1 already, and told it to go ahead --
thinking I might see a recommendation in the pop-up warning me I was about to
install an older component over a newer one. To my dismay, it never even
ASKED about it; now I have two different .NET Frameworks installed, 1.1 (with
the KB886903 Hotfix) and v1.0.3705 "(English)". If I uninstall the
newly-installed 1.0.3705, will VS happily use the already-installed 1.1
Framework? Must I leave it installed? Must I un-install something? Or is
VS 2002 hopelessly tied to an outdated OS?

I have the same problems like yours when i try to install Visual Studio 2005
on my desktop that has VS 2003 already. After uninstalling VS 2005, I got
error message when I used VS 2003. To fix this problem I repaired the .NET
Framework 1.1.

Edy's situation is different enough that I wish someone could reply who knows
about the 2002 situation.

Edy had to regress to a previous installation's status, whereas my
installation (first inst of VS on this situation) wants to replace the
up-to-date supported OS's Framework. I'd like to know if I can use the more
modern Framework, and if not, what other consequences there will be.

VS2002 uses .NET Framework v1.0, so it must be installed. If you want to use
v1.1, you need to upgrade to VS2003. The two frameworks are separate
products, so it's not a problem having both installed.
