I'm stuck. If I try to re-install it shows that a previous install failed.
Then when it tries to uninstall, that fails as well.

I tried windows installer cleanup, but this didn't help.

Note I'm running Windows XP SP2 with all current updates.

I got past the uninstall issues, but when I re-install I get this error log:

No, I did an uninstall and removed all the program directories.
I haven't tired zapping the keys yet but I did a run through with regedit
removing anything with the words visual studio in it.

Now the uninstall is working, and it appears to be removing keys properly.

It would take about 10 nights in a row to reinstall the OS, applications,
and all the games I have.

You may think so, but you've got leftovers hanging around.
You're down to either trying manual removal steps or wiping your install
drive and reinstalling from the OS up.
VS 2002 manual removal articles are no longer available, but you can try
adjusting these steps, saved from an article by Tim Macaulay [Msft]:
