I got an extremely bad virus which fortunately I was able to get rid of. In
the process I no longer have administrator rights and cannot access the
control panel. How do I repair? and if I need to reinstall, will I lose the

With Windows XP running, put your XP CD in a drive and let it auto-start.
You should get an option to repair XP. The repair will not destroy your
applications.
Fair warning: depending on the amount of damage done, you may not be able to
repair XP. If repair is not possible, a complete reinstall will require you
to reinstall your other software.

Thank you. I had tried that but I don't get a repair option.

It would appear that that is *not* correct. I no longer have Carol's
original message here to check, but unless someone else later added an
additional newsgroup, this thread is crossposted (not multiposted) to
microsoft.public.dotnet.academic and microsoft.public.windowsxp.general.

How far did you go into the setup process? IIRC the option for a repair
install does not appear until the second or third screen (maybe further). If
you're uncomfortable with going further (and, I can't say I blame you),
you'll get better answers in a dedicated Windows XP group. To find a good
group,

Go to:

http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?guid=1080912A-26C5-7040-AFDD-2224A4FEB3EA

Then open your language in the TreeView on the left, scroll down to
"Windows", open and scroll down to "Windows XP", and
select a group from that category.

Meanwhile, I'll cross post this to a likely group.

I think I misremembered.
I believe you must boot from the XP CD to get the repair option.

Thanks, Tom.
What Carol actually did was to multipost (two separate messages) instead of
crossposting (one message sent to two or more groups).
If she had crossposted, I could have seen the other group in her message
headers and would not have duplicated her efforts :).

It was in fact crossposted. I see both groups in her message, your messages
and this one.

You guys know way too much about this stuff.... thanks to all of you! I
tried both ways and didn't get a repair.... I stopped the install for I don't
want to have to re-install all the programs as that would take forever!
Maybe if I tell you exactly what is wrong, there is another way to do this.
The virus attacked my administrator rights and I cannot change anything in
the gpedit.msc command. I cannot get to the control panel either nor does
it show in the start menu....

Any other words of wisdom?

I just remembered, I am probably trying to use the wrong CD as I believe this
computer (we have two) was upgraded through the internet and we did not
receive a CD. Now I need to know where to find it and see if I get the
repair option from there... any ideas?

What I first responded to (8/29/2007 4:16 PM), shows only the academic group
in the Newsgroups: field in Windows Mail. This appears to be the first
message in the thread here, and is the basis for my comment about
multiposting vs. crossposting. It may be that I don't have all the messages.
As long as the OP gets the help needed...
