File system question. Even expert config-techies don't seem to know
this, but one of the local OS experts will:

Chkdsk, on a newly formatted partition, often says "140000KB in use by
the system.' I'd understand if the MFT was keeping previous directory
info, but the number above (140MB) seems typical for newly formatted
drives.

Google turned up mostly people complaining about this number
continually growing, often using huge percentages of drive space as
time goes on. This would also indicate a flaw in deallocating
directory entries.

I originally got curious about this when attempting to do a
byte-by-byte mirror of two identical drives. Turned off System
Restore on both drives, emptied the recycle bin, etc. One drive was
noticeably lower in free space after synching. Tried repartitioning
and reformatting that drive...still lower!

Hello _DD,

We know that the best solution is to ask guys from the windows.filesystem/windowsxp.*

Michael, Thanks for the lead. Sounds like the perfect bunch to ask.
Unfortunately, I can't find anything like that. I've checked two news
providers. Could you provide a pointer to the group or website
