Error when upgrading from vb6 to .Net Richard
10/30/2003 7:36:42 AM
vb.net upgrade: I'm trying to upgrade a vb6 project to .net and I get the
following error when the wizard tries to upgrade the files
"Exception occurred: Invalid system configuration (unable
to locate Microsoft.VisualBasic.UpgradeExtensions.dll).
Please run setup again."

I have reinstalled Visual Studio .Net and I have used
RegAsm.exe to register the dll but that does not work.
Can anyone help?

I have heard about this problem in early beta versions. Which version
of VS.NET are you using?

John,

I have unregistered and re-registered the dll and both entries do exist
in the registry but it still does not work.

I have not had a beta of VS installed on this machine.

Thanks for you help, I really do appreciate it

Richard..

Hi Richard,

I'm sorry you've run into problems running the Upgrade tool.

I would try a couple of thinks first run regasm /unregister then re-run
regasm against the upgradeextensions.dll. If that still doesn't help run
regedit and take a look to verify that you have the following registry:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{5AF339EB-7521-3CA5-97DB-26D60DFEAE23}
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Microsoft.VisualBasic.UpgradeExtensions.ResUtil

I'm curious did you ever have a beta of Visual Studio.Net installed on this
machine?

If you try running the command line version of the upgrade tool from
\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio\VB7\VBUpgrade\VBUpgrade.exe does it
give you a different error message?

Sorry for the hassle, we'll get this figured out.

Hi Richard,

I was hoping that might shed some more light on the problem.

I would suggest you download a little utility from systinernals call regmon
(from http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/source/regmon.shtml) and run this
when attempting to upgrade a project. This is a great little utility that
will monitor the registry activity and may show us more about why the
upgrade tool is failing to find the UpgradeExtensions.

If you'd like you can email the log file from RegMon to
vbresult@microsoft.com and I'll be glad to a take a look at it also.

John,

I purchased a MSDN Subscription last week, which included VS.NET 2003.
After I installed it on my computer I tried upgrading my project and
everything work just great. I just want to say thanks for all your help
in trying to figure out what was wrong with the 2002 upgrade issue I
really do appreciate it.

If you wish to still pursue the issue and would like me to send the log
file to you of the registry activity I will do so.

Thanks,

Richard..

Thanks Richard for the update.

I'm glad that you're up and running. I don't want to take up any more of
your time with getting the log but thank you very much for the offer.

Good Luck with your upgrades.

Please be sure and let us know if you have any further question.
