vb.net upgrade:
Hi,

We have a few business critical applications developed by an external
consultant with VB6 over the past 5 years. As we have to take care of the
stuff now by ourself I'm asking myself if we can use the Visual Studio .NET
with the VB6 code without migrate the application to .NET?!

Soon or later we will replace the applications but currently we need to
ensure the day to day support.

Any comments highly appreciatet!

Kind regards

You can have both VB6 IDE and VS.Net IDE on the same computer without any
problems.

VS.Net cannot open and edit VB6 code without converting it.

VS6 (as opposed to VB6 as a standalone product) is still easy to find. There
are plenty of legit vendors so don't go buying a pirated copy from eBay. If
you dig deep enough, you can still find VB6 for sale. Problem is, it's about
the same price (sometimes even more) than the full "suite" so you might as
well grab Visual Studio. Fire up Google and search for the exact phrase
"Visual Studio 6". The column on the right (google ads) will be full of
offers.

Isn't it still included in VS2003 packages? Or am I confusing that with the
discs in the MSDN subscription that comes with most VS2003 packages?

And that would be the better way to go. If I recall correctly, the license
to VS2003 gives you the backwards license to VB6 at no additional cost.

Yeah but..... if you choose to use that downgrade license, you're giving up
your VS2003 license.

fwiw, I've never heard of MS giving VB6 away for free, anywhere. If this is
some kind of new "bonus" for buying .Net, there's quite a few people in the
VB6 groups that would be interested.
