This is probably not the right group for your question Karen but someone may
nevertheless be able to help.
I have not used Norton for quite some time because this is exactly the kind
of problem it seems prone to having. Is it telling you it cannot install
because it is already installed?
If that's the problem then I can only suggest you first try and find the
solution here
http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/home_homeoffice/index_ts_ie.html In the past the only way I have been able to fix this is by removing all
traces of Norton / Symantec folders from the computer and all the registry
entries but hopefully Symantec have become a little smarter these days :) If
they don't have a solution for your particular version I can tell you that
cleaning up the registry is likely going to be a nightmare.
In my opinion the ideal solution would be to reformat, reinstall your
version of Windows and throw anything related to Norton in the trashcan :)
Personally I think it's the most bloated, worthless piece of junk ever :)
For antivirus there are a couple of free ones that seem just as good, look
around for AVG or Avast using Google, I personally use AVG. If you feel
paying is better then there's Trend (We use at work) F-Secure, Kaspersky,
Panda and others.
Instead of the Firewall you would probably do just as well buying a cheap
"Router" if you don't already have one. Kerio make a useful firewall and
there are many others, and of course XP and upwards have their own. The
windows one will not warn you of programs trying to connect (Outgoing
connections) but I'm not sure that ability is as useful as it once was
anyway.
One product that is not free but I use all the time is BOClean from
www.nsclean.com that will take care of some nasties that not AV seems able
to handle.
Hope this helps a bit, sorry I don;t have more specific answers.
