visual studio .net documentation : Online help is unavailable in IDE

Suddenly I'm not able to access the online help from
within visual studio 2003. When I select a help topic I
get this message instead of the help page:
----------
The page cannot be displayed

The page you are looking for is currently unavailable.
The Web site might be experiencing technical
difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser
settings.

I do not think there is any IDE setting you could alter that would cause
this to occur. The question is, what did happen? Presumably you have not
deleted some Help (.hxs) files from your system. Could it be a network
problem -- is your online Help installed on your computer or is it on a
network share?

How do I tell where the IDE is looking for the online
help? This is the setting I was looking for & was unable
to find.

The network could be an issue. How do I find out where
visual studio is looking for the online help? This is the
setting I've been unable to locate.

Nuts. Terence, I'm reading at home, so I don't have Visual Studio in front
of me, and I cannot remember where to look for this information. I'm going
to make a couple of suggestions (because I won't be at work for the next
couple of days to get a better look), but I may be sending you on a wild
goose chase.

You can look in the \Program Files folder on your system for the Visual
Studio folder. One of its subfolders should be and MSDN folder. A level or
two under that (in a folder named "1033", I think, a value representing
English-US) will be a folder full of hundreds of files having a ".HXS"
filename extension. That is, IF your Help is installed locally, that's where
it would appear. If there are only a handful of .HXS files installed there,
that probably means that you have most of the Help on the network somewhere,
and just a few basics regarding setup are installed locally.

The Tools menu has an Options command that opens a big dialog box. One part
of that dialog has a Help section that lets you select a "collection" of
Help topics. I think the right collection to choose is "Visual Studio
Combined Collection," which is the complete set of Visual Studio Help
topics. But I do not think there is anything in that dialog that specifies
an actual physical location (whether network or local installation) of the
Help files. But I may be mistaken, so check it out.
You might also want to look up the Combined Help Collection Manager via the
Index, if it is working for you. Use the string "installing documentation
for Visual Studio .NET" in the Index lookup box. I suppose that even if you
can do that you may get a "page cannot be displayed" error, but I'm hoping
that a few basic online Help pages are still available to you. I dunno.
I apologize for the tardy, scattershot response.

Roger, thanks for the suggestions. Not a complete wild
goose chase. Here's what I did to get the on-line help
back this morning:

I looked in C:\Program Files\MSDN\2003FEB\1033 & found
that I had a whole lotta hxs files, so I seem to have the
help files installed locally.

I opened VS & went to tools..options..environment..help,
where the preferred collection was already set to
Combined Help Collection.

I changed the preferred collection to "MSDN Library for
Visual Studio .NET 2003", then closed VS & restarted it.

I then changed the preferred collection back to "Combined
Help Collection", closed VS & restarted it.

Now the on-line help is available again. Whew!
