visual studio .net documentation:
Hi all,

Was just seeing if anyone knows of an error relating to
the dynamic help in visual studio .net 2002? I have
all the documentation installed on my computer (XPsp1),
however no help at all is viewable in either the dynamic
help section in visual studio, or in the microsoft
document viewer.

After searching microsoft's KB, I found the exact problem
I seem to be having at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;316641 , however this problem is apparently only seen
on NT4! I am logged in as an administer, and still
receive "The operation could not be completed" error
message when entering a search item, and 'No link is
available' is displayed permanently in the little dynamic
help area of VS.net.

Any suggestions or fixes that anyone could share? (I'm
wondering if perhaps the documentation relies on a
specific windows service to operate properly? And yes, I
have tried re-installing VS.Net ;-) If you need more info,
just let me know and i'll do my best to help.

Thanks in advance,

Camo

Camo, There may be a flaw in the registry for the MSDN Visual Studio 2002
documentation. With that in mind, I have a suggestion for you to try. It
involves making a change in the Windows Registry. Because the Registry is a
sensitive mechanism that you do not want to get fouled up, I need to give
you some information about proceeding with caution.

You should be careful when doing anything in the Registry Editor. You may
want to back up the Registry before editing it. There is a KnowledgeBase
Article named "Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry" that has the
following warning in it:

"If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you can cause serious problems
that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft does not
guarantee that problems that you cause by using Registry Editor incorrectly
can be resolved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk."

This article contains instructions for backing up, editing, and restoring
the registry. Here's the URL:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;256986

With all of that said, here's the process I have in mind for you to try
Camo:
Run the tool named regedit.exe (the Registry Editor). Open the tree on the
left-hand side as shown below.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SOFTWARE
Microsoft
VisualStudio
7.1
Help
0x0409
{32AF11EA-A804-47bd-BDAE-31653BD0CDD9}

(Note that if you are using a language other than English-US, the
hexadecimal value after "Help" will be different than shown above.)
Select the long value enclosed in the curly braces. Then in the right side
of the registry editor, look at the value named "VS_Docs". The data
associated with that value *should* be "7.1". If it instead says "Not
supported", then that string needs to be changed.
To change it, double-click the "VS_Docs" name, which opens that value in a
small dialog box. In the "Value data" box, change "Not supported" to "7.1".
Close the registry editor and restart Visual Studio.
Do NOT change the "VS_Docs" data value for any other elements that you find
in that part of the registry.
Please let me know what happens.
