visual studio .net documentation : VS 2005.NET won't use MSDN Library

John D. Goulden

Installed VS 2005.NET, then installed the January 2006 MSDN Library using
the VS installer. MSDN works fine if I launch it from Start - Programs but
VS claims that there is no local help. I have read Gary Chang's fix for this
but he makes references to "MSDN For Visual Studio 2005" which doesn't make
any sense to me - I have VS 2005 and the MSDN Library, but nothing like what
he describes. What do I need to do to integrate the MSDN Library int VS?
This is puzzline as I installed VS and MSDN the same way I have been for
years.

Hi John,

[quoted text, click to view]

Just as I suggested before, the January 2006 MSDN Library is a stand-alone
MSDN edition, it cannot be integrated with Visual Studio 2005.

You need the "MSDN For Visual Studio 2005" to integrate with your Visual
Studio 2005 The "MSDN For Visual Studio 2005" is shipped with your Visual
Studio 2005, you need to install it within the Visual Studio 2005's
setup.exe program(which in your VS2005 DVD's vs directory), the second
option "Change or Remove Product Documentation" is the choice to install it.

If you have installed the MSDN For Visual Studio 2005 separately(I mean via
the setup.exe in your VS2005 DVD's msdn directory), you may need to remove
it first.

WIsh this helps!

OK, I see what I did wrong now. On the day I decided to instal VS 2005 the
Jan 06 libraries arrived in the mail. I grabbed them, read as far as
"Integrates with Microsoft Visual Studio..." and installed them instead of
the library CDs that came with VS. My fault for not reading carefully
enough.

Thanks

That said, it IS annoying that MS is shipping MSDN library CDs that won't
integrate with VS 2005. Hopefully this will not be true of future MSDN
releases.

Hi John,

The MSDN library in MSDN library CDs is a stand-alone product, it has no
relationship with the Visual Studio Product. Only the MSDN library from the
Visaul Studio product's package is a part of the Visual Studio and could be
integrated with VIsual Studio.

Thanks for your understanding!

I have never seen an MSDN library that was only a stand-alone product; every
set of MSDN library CDs I have has "Integrates with Microsoft Visual
Studio..." printed right on the CD. My original problem was that I used a
recent set of library disks (January 06) that integrates with VS.NET 2003
help, but not VS 2005. My question was, will future MSDN library releases
integrate with VS 05 help as they currently do with VS 03.

Hi John,

[quoted text, click to view]

I am afraid I am unable to give you a definitive answer at this time, I
cannot guarantee this for a product that has not been released yet. I
highly suggest you can submit your concern to our product feedback center,
our corresponding product team may communicate with you directly directly
on the issue there:
