MS knowledge base article 320788 lets you download a white
paper about an MDAC merge module which can be included in
a .NET deployment project. The white paper has a link to
download a self extracting file(Mdacinstall.exe) which
contains the the merge module mdac.msm. This merge module
will install MDAC 2.7 when merged in the deployment
project. The version of MDAC included in this module
appears to be the MDAC version installed by Visual Studio
2002. Is there a merge module available which will install
the MDAC version installed by .NET 2003 or is necessary to
use the orca.exe utility from the windows installer SDK to

Hi Bob,

Thanks for posting.

The MDAC included in VS.Net 2002 is version 2.7, while the MDAC in VS.Net
2003 is 2.7 SP1. As far as I know, currently we do not have more updated
MDAC merge module. We may need to use Orca here.

The process is described in details in the white paper. It is not very
complicated. If you need it, I can make one for you and send it to your
email account. It is about 5.2 MB after zipping.

Hi Felix - I tried to send you an e-mail outside of this
newsgroup - not sure you got it. I tried using ORCA. It
seemed to go OK, but I didn't know if the ORCA tool could
display something to confirm the binary was updated. I
haven't had a chance to actually try an install with my
updated version of the MDAC merge module. Would appreciate
if you could send one so I can compare. Thanks - Bob

Hi Bob,

I have sent you the file to bobduke@pacbell.net. It is quite large and I am
not sure whether you can receive it or not.

Orca does not prompt to confirm the binary is updated. It only prompts for
overwriting. In fact it does not upload the stream until you save the
changes to the MSM file. You may notice a small delay when saving the file.

I hope the information is useful to you.
