visual studio .net general : VB .Net 2003 Standard - unable to get updates or support

I just bought a package at Borders today containing a book and VB .Net 2003.
It won't get updates from the web but gives the error described in KB 836454
which says to contact Micosoft product support. When I put in the product
number it says this isn't eligible for online support. The box didn't say
anything about this limitation. My questions are:
1) How do I get the hotfix for this as described in KB 836454?
2) Is this package from Microsoft Press really ineligible for support? If
so, then I want to take it back and get one that is.

I found some threads on this over in
microsoft.public.vstudio.general
microsoft.public.vstudio.setup
so I think I'm going to get someone from Microsoft to email me the hotfix.

the publisher obtained the software at a bargain price and agreed to be
responsible for tech support. You might want to contact the publisher and
see what they have to say.

Hmmm. Microsoft (or rather Microsoft Press) was the publisher. I'll
certainly take it up with them.
