VS2005 RC Slow?

VS2005 RC Slow? Thorben Jensen

visual studio .net general: I have just upgraded to VS.2005 RC and find it very very slow when running
applications in debug mode. It runs about 10 times slower that beta 2. Has
anyone else noticed this or is it just me?

I am using WinXP sp2 and centrino 1.8 Ghz laptop

I have not. It seems to debug at about the same rate as VS.Net 2003,
although that is just my impression. I don't know the actual speed.

I have just installed RC1, and have found it *very* slow in comparision to
VS 2003. It does seem much faster than Beta 2, however.

VS 2005 RC1 does have a major memory leak. I have let it sit in the
background while paroozing for some stuff, and it just jumps up in memory,
without even being used. VS 2003 starts around 25MB (with small project
open) and usually climbs to around 45MB. VS 2005 starts around 90MB (with
the same small project open) and I have seen it well past 180MB after
sitting open unused, for about 6 hours.

RC1: Windows 2000 sp4; 2.8GHz; 1500MB DDRAM; SATA 10,000RPM RAID 0
B2: Windows 2000 sp4; 2.8GHz; 1000MB DDRAM; IDE 7,200RPM RAID 0

Is that what the task manager reports? If so, you shouldn't pay much
attention to that. It just reports the current working set of the
process.

If you have 1500 MB available, Windows might allow just any process to
use 180 MB, even if idling. With plenty of free RAM, there is no real
need to reclaim it.

I find it about 10-100 times slower than BETA 2 - I have a project where I
do some looping truough a dataset setting up the form in the program load.,
has anyone else tried this. I cannot notice any difference when I just start
a normal windows project.

I have tried on five different computers with same results. It's so slow
that it's almost unusable.

I will e-mail a sample project if anyone is interested in testing.
