What's the minimum spec and will VS.NET 2005 run at an acceptable speed on it?

TIA

There are a hjalf-dozen different version, each with a different set of
system requirements. You can read about all of them here:

Here's an unofficial opinion :)
We have VS 2005 running in several classrooms and labs on P4 PC's (3.2 GHz
CPU, IIRC) with 2 Gig memory. VS 2005 works quite briskly on that hardware.
I have an older Athlon XP 2500 PC in my office with 1 Gig of memory, and I
rate VS 2005 performance as acceptable on that hardware.
At home (heh, heh), I run it on a dual core A64 at 2.4 GHz with 2 gig of
memory and it's very quick (much faster than on the P4's).
Bear in mind that I'm not doing 60 project solutions or anything of that
nature.
IMHO, the more memory the better, and don't go by minimums unless you're a
very patient person.

Use at least 1 GB of RAM.

Just my 2 euro-cents.

---- PIII 850 MHz 512 Mb RAM XP Pro sp2 fully updated -----

and VS 2005 Pro runs well ... the noticeable exceptions are the
HUGE delay (typically 30 seconds) on initial invocation of the MSDN
Help/Search/Favorites window. This is a known issue (hopefully will
be fixed in a sp).
I've only used the VC++ preferred environment though.
I find that opening some of the Preferences/Property Pages choices have
slow initial startups (some sort of initialization) .. but the Compile/Link
routine stuff is fast.

I've just checked out
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/products/vspro/details/default.aspx

Hmm, the minimum hardware specs are a bit vague. My Pentium 600 with 512MB
RAM and 120gig disk and DVD writer seem to fit the spec, but based on the
other response to my post, I think VS.NET 2005 will be, at best, sluggish on
it.

I agree that 1GB of RAM is a much better idea. Remember that minimum system
requirements are just that: mimimum. This means the minimum requirements to
just run the software. With anything less, you can't run the software. It
doesn't mean the minimum requirements for the software to run well. It also
means that if you have the minimum, and are running other software
concurrently, you no longer have the minimum.

VS.Net is a powerhouse of artifical intelligence and functionality. This
uses a lot of system resources, both processor and RAM, but especially RAM.
To get the best performance out of it, you need to have plenty, and 512 MB
just doesn't sound like plenty.

I agree, but my system can take a max of 768MB and both memory slots are
full. Looks like I'll need to invest in a new system but I'll try VS.NET on
my existing machine first.

Thx

Thanks for the info.

I'm running Windows 2000 Pro SP4 which uses less memory and resources than
XP Pro so your post in encouaging. I'll try VS.NET on my machine and see how
it goes.
