visual studio .net general : Problem: "Choose Default Environment Settings" dialog repeatedly appears in VS 2005

Hi,

I've installed Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1 and a few days after
installation, I'm now perpetually getting the "Choose Default
Environment Settings" dialog appearing every time I start visual studio.

The dialog text says "Before you begin using Visual Studio for the first
time, you need to specify the type of the development activity you
engage in most..." etc.

But I've been using it for months and I answer the question every time I
load it.

At the same time as this, it creates one or more folders in the same
directory as the SLN file I clicked on to load it. This folder is called
Visual Studio 2005 and inside it there is another folder called Settings.

I'm not sure if this problem was introduced after installing SP1 or if
it's simply a coincidence because it took a week or so before it started
happening.

Has anybody else had this problem? Any ideas how I can fix it?

Hi Nick,

According to your description, I understand that Visual Studio 2005 always
prompt "Choose Default Environment Settings" dialog after a few days you
install SP1.
If I misunderstand anything here, please don't hesitate to correct me.

In order to narrow down and resolve this issue, I want to confirm some
information with you.
1. Based on my experience, such VS problem could be caused by add-ins, have
your VS 2005 IDE installed any third-party's add-ins.
2. Please check whether or not there is file named
"CurrentSettings.vssettings" in "My Documents\Visual Studio 2005\Settings"
folder.
3. We would like to suggest you reset all settings in VS 2005 IDE by
following steps. Please test this method and let me know whether it works
for you.
Click "Import and Export Settings" in "Tools" menu of VS 2005.
Select the "Reset all settings" option in the prompt dialog.
Save current setting and load a default setting.

Thanks!

Hi,

The problem seems to have disappeared by itself (after rebooting) but if
the problems come back I will try resetting the settings as you suggest.

The only third party add on I have is VisualSVN for source code control.
If the problem persists, I will try uninstalling this also.

Thanks,

Nick...
