Custom toolbars lost (after installing Visio?) Francis L Spafford

visual studio .net ide:
I noticed that my custom toolbars are missing from vsnet 2003 today.
I had 2-3 toolbars with custom images that invoked vsnet 2003 macros.

This happened on the first run of vsnet 2003 since installing Visio.
Could that installation have caused the problem?

Is this a known problem?
How can it be prevented?
Should I try to backup the toolbar configuration?
How?

Thanks,

I suspect that is what did it. The same thing happens when you install
DevPartner Profiler. I wish they had at least mentioned the problem so that
I could have backed up my customizations before installing their product.

Hello Frank,

Thanks for your post. As I understand, the problem you are facing is that
custom toolbars are lost after installing Visio.

1. Based on my experience and research, I did not find any known issue
about this problem. You can also resort to the following newsgroup:
microsoft.public.visio

2. In the meantime, the toolbar configuration is stored in the following
file:

Documents and Settings\<your account>\Application
Data\Microsoft\VisualStudio\7.0\1033\CmdUI.PRF

After installing Visio, you may need to backup the CmdUI.PRF file and then
try storing the original one to see if it works.

For more infomation on "Locations for User Customizations in Visual Studio
.NET", please refer to KB article 320851:

Hope this helps.

Gents,

First, small correction. The folder path is most likely

Documents and Settings\<your account>\Application
Data\Microsoft\VisualStudio\7.1\1033\CmdUI.PRF

as the version number for VS .NET 2003 is 7.1, not 7.0.

Next, Frank, could you please check the content of the Toolbars tab of the
Tools -> Customize... dialog. It might be that the toolbars are just not
shown, but their configuration is still intact. If this is the case, tick
the chekboxes next to the toolbars to bring them up.

Thanks for the reply.

I had already done as you suggested, and the toolbars were not shown. (I
knew about this already. I created the toolbars to provide access to

Please see the post in this thread about DevPartner Profiler causing the
same problem.

I would like specific instructions on how to backup and restore my
custom toolbar environment (there are plenty of folders/files in the
article). An automatic tool to perform the steps would be very helpful!

I would like to know that the steps provided have been verified to work
when the customizations are truely lost.

Thanks,

Hello Frank,

Thanks for your response. As stated in my previous reply, you may need to
back up/restore the following file:

Documents and Settings\<your account>\Application
Data\Microsoft\VisualStudio\7.1\1033\CmdUI.PRF

Please kindly note there is a known issue that backup/restore the PRF file
may not always work. Because it contains a hash value that is specific to
the set of packages installed on a machine and their locations. So unless
the two machines are set up exactly identically, and the cmdtable (.CTM)
files already generated on both machines and matching, then the PRF file
will be deleted and replaced with a new one.

Even on the same machine, PRF file may not work if you installed any
additional packages in the machine after you backed up the PRF file.

Hope this helps.
