visual studio .net ide:

I get an error message each time I try to run "Check for Updates" within
vs.net 2003. From searching the newsgroups, I see this is a well known
issue, but yet nothing I've found clears up the problem for me. Thus, I
continue to ponder the question of how to know if/when there might be an
update.

An older post on 2004-02-23 from a gentleman at Microsoft says this:
"This is a known issue.
The KB Article for this issue is 836454
This is not yet published and might get published by the time you get to
read this. If it is not published by then then please call PSS and use
this
Article number as reference and they will help you get QFE for this
issue.

However, I find no such KB article today.

Where can I get a definative answer or position on this topic?

Thanks, Bruce

Hi Bruce,

Thanks for posting. As far as the KB article Q836454 is concerned, it has
not yet been ready.

To fix the "check for updates" issue, we have a number of things to check:

1. In your "Internet Options", "General" tab, click the "Languages" button.
Do we have "English (United States) [en-us] listed there? Is it the first
one?

2. In your "Internet Options", verify that the proxy settings are correct.

3. Open a command line interface and re-register the "urlmon.dll" with the
following commands and then reboot the machine:

RegSvr32 /u c:\windows\system32\urlmon.dll
RegSvr32 c:\windows\system32\urlmon.dll

Do these help? If not, I am afraid that we have to check for updtates
manually. Currently, we don't have updates for Visual Studio .Net 2003. And
if you want to check it, please go to
http://msdn.microsoft.com/services/vs/2003/vsupdateb1.txt. If all values
equal to 0 there should be no updates. You may also check the following web
site:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/downloads/updates/default.aspx

It lists all the updates and service packs for Visual Studio. You may also
notice some updates for Framework 1.0 are listed as well.

I hope the information is useful to you.

Why would this need to be set? What about those of us who aren't in America?

I experience quite odd behaviour from the Check for Updates function in VS 2003; the first time I
use it it gives an error saying it couldn't download anything. If I hit Retry however then it works
and tells me there are no updates available. The next time I run it, it gives the connection error
again, but the again Retry works. The same thing happens if, instead of choosing Retry, I select
Cancel then manually Check for Updates again. So it seems that some state is being toggled and every
other check is broken!

Hi Andrew,

I am sorry for the inconvenience this issue causes to you. Currently we are
still working on it. I hope the workaround will be acceptable for now.

This brings up the question: Will microsoft be providing any updates
(service packs) for the current versions of VS.Net or will the only "update"
be VS2005?

Hi Brad,

We will have updates and service packs for the current VS.Net versions.
However, I cannot tell you when they will be publicly relased.
