How to disable VB background compiler? Bill foust

visual studio .net ide:
I am looking for a way to disable the background compiler in VB.NET projects.
We can disable it for the entire machine if need be, but I can't find an
option to do it.

Visual Studio just can't handle projects or solutions with large number of
files well at all. By large, I mean > 200 files. At 100 files the IDE gets
sluggish. at 200 it becomes so sluggish that is unsusable for every-day
editing. At 500 it gets so sluggish that is essentially unusable at all and
at 1000 files it gets downright unstable and we experience crashes in the VB
language package or the IDE itself crashes.

I hit this issue every single day. I belive the root cause of these problems
is the background VB Compiler and I would like to at least try turning it
off. Yeah, the blue-squiggly lines are nice, but when it takes 10 minutes to
disappear after its been fixed, then the value is greatly diminished.

I tease my boss that I'm about ready to return to Emacs, GCC and linux.. LOL.

This is just an FYI to anyone else out there having this issue. Microsoft has
a hotfix out there that addresses this issue. From my experience, it is not
perfect, but it does make things slightly better. Search for article 920805.

i'm still waiting to see if you can turn off the VB Background compiler.
