visual studio .net service packs: error PRJ0002 : Error result -1073741819 returned from 'C:\Program
Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\VC\bin\mt.exe'.

The above error occurs when I attempt to build the Release configuration of
my VC++2005 Win 32 DLL.

The DEBUG release compiles and builds without any errors.

This error appears in the IDE window pursuant to a dialog box that says :

mt.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience.

(The associated error report is posted in full at the end of this post.)

I have researched this error on-line and have been able to find scant
information. The only posts I have found suggest that it is an error that
relates to BETA versions of Visual Studio but I have never had any Betas
installed. I do, however, have a full copy of Visual Studio 6 installed on
my development machine as well as VS2005.

Settings that apply to my Release build are as follows:

I have re-installed VS 2005 SP1 (in the hope of "replacing" a "corrupt"
mt.exe) but this has not fixed the problem.

I am working on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2.

Can anyone from Microsoft (or elsewhere) advise as to how to rectify this
problem with the Manifest Tool executable?

This problem can be resolved by using an alternative version of mt.exe
You copy the newer version of mt.exe into the same directory as the older
version.
To find all versions of mt.exe, use Windows Search. Evidently, VS2005
installs multiple versions of the mt.exe manifest tool.
I wasted over 3 development days on this problem... Hope this helps someone
else out.
