visual studio .net setup : Install/update problem

I suspected that something was wrong with my installation of VS.net 2003
Professional. I was having problems in my debugger. I decided to do a
repair or update. The original install of VS was done on a DVD labeled May
2003 from MSDN. Subsequently I have received newer DVDs from MSDN with
VS.net 2003 professional on it. The latest is a yellow DVD, Disc 2431.1
(Dec 2003). I used this DVD. I went in and selected update/Repair
Prerequisites. This seemed to work OK. I did the same thing from the
VS.net 2003 Professional option on the main menu. It appeared to go fine
untill it reached a certain point where it couldn't find VS_Setup.msi. I
don't know why. I could see it right there on the new DVD in the place you
would expect it but when I selected it I got an error message of "Error
1706, No valid source could be found for product VS.net professional
English. The windows installer can not continue.

Because this failed and I did not know what else to do, I put the original
May 2003 DVD in the drive. Fortunately I had not thrown it away. It
accepted it and the install continued. I wondered afterwards if things
installed correctly.

Checking help about it says:

MS Development Environment: Version 7.1.3088.
MS net Framework 1.1 Version 1.1.4322
Microsoft Visual Basic .NET 69462-335-0000007-18718

My question is, did things install correctly? It appears ok when I use it.
In the future, how do I, (shouldn't I) avoid using the older DVD. Why
wouldn't it continue with the DVD I have that is new.

If you simply do an update or repair is it normally as long a process as a
new install? It took over an hour.

What do I need to learn from this?

Hello Woody,

Thank you for your post here. Yes, I'm afraid that a normal repair or
update of the VS .NET takes quite a long time. Back to your question,
please help me collect the following information:

1. Which version of VS .NET do you have on your machine ( old DVD) and
which version is included in the new DVD? The two programs are exactly the
same or not? You know, we don't expect to update an Academic edition with a
Professional media, for example.

2. How did you try to repair the VS .NET? In the Control Panel| Add or
Remove Programs or run the setup.exe file on the new DVD? Or you have tried
the both?

Should you have any concerns, please feel free to post here. By the way,
since your VS .NET works fine as you said, you may also submit a post or
support case whenever you have problem with the VS .NET.

Both the old version of the VS.net and the new version of VS.net are VS.net
2003 Professional. One DVD has a date on the DVD label of May 2003 and the
lastest version has a date on the DVD label of Dec 2003.

I ran the setup.exe on the new DVD. The following is a quote from my
original message

"I went in and selected update/Repair

thing from the
VS.net 2003 Professional option on the main menu. It appeared to go fine

Because this failed and I did not know what else to do, I put the original
May 2003 DVD in the drive. I thought that if it wouldn't accept the .msi on
the new DVD, maybe it would accept the .msi on the old DVD. It did accept
it. Fortunately I had not thrown it (the old DVD) away. It
accepted it and the install continued. I wondered afterwards (however) if
things
installed correctly or not. I have been using it and it appears normal but
I wonder.

Thank you for your reply. Based on my research, this seems to be a known
issue. In version 2.0 of the Windows Installer, you did not use the
original product media for that installation|repair| upgrade, you may
receive the error if the MSI file is in different locations on the
different media. The resolutions are provided in the Knowledge Based
article from: 299803 PRB: Error 1706 "No Valid Source Could Be Found" When
Installing MSI http://support.microsoft.com/?id=299803.

Another method is quite simple: Uninstall the VS .NET on your machine and
then reinstall the program from your new DVD. Then you'll have no problem
to upgrade or repair the VS .NET with your new DVD in the future.
