Problem opening existing solution when VS 2003 installed Thomas G. Ward

visual studio .net setup:
I am trying to install VS 2003 on an XP box. When I try
to open an existing solution it errors saying that the
specified Web Server is not running ASP.NET 1.1. I found
this error message when I searched Microsoft sites. They
said that it is related to a setting in IIS 6.0. I do
not have IIS 6.0 on this box. I am not sure if you can
load IIS 6.0 on an XP box.

This is my first attempt at loading VS 2003. IIS 5.1
does not have the Web Services Extensions option. The
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 817267 stated that you
need to go to Web Services Extensions (In IIS
6.0) and click ASP.NET v1.1.4322 in the details pane of
the web service extension list and click "Allowed" to
change from "Prohibited". This does not seem to exist
under 5.1 or I have not found it yet.

Do you have any suggestions.

I have tried to register using aspnet_regiis -i but this
did not make any difference. I also registered the dll
for aspnet_isapi.dll which did not change anything.

When I installed VS 2003 it passed all the requirements
checks so I should not need IIS 6.0. But I can not find
the 5.1 equivalent of Web Service Extension Details.

Thanks in advance for any assistance

Hi,

It seems that the IIS service on you XP box is not functioning correctly.
Have you checked its status? You may access it by opening ¡°Internet
Information Services¡± under ¡°Administrative Tools¡±. Make sure the
¡°Default Web Site¡± is running.

You may also consider reinstalling IIS if it is badly corrupted. Please
visit ¡°\Setup\WebServer.htm¡± for how to install IIS and
¡°\Setup\WebServerInfo.htm¡± for how to register .Net components for IIS.
Both of the files are located on your Visual Studio .Net installation CD1.
Give it a try and see whether it helps.

Bradley Jiang

Thomas,

Did you find a solution to this?

I am having the same problem but on a windows 2000 box. All was working fine until yesterday and now I'm getting the same error and it's driving me crazy.
I can still actually run the web apps thru a browser and on any error pages it tells me that it *is* running under 1.1.4322 - but if I try to load any 1.1 apps into VS.Net 2003 it tells the same error. I tried the same things you did to no avail so would love to know if you found out how to solve it!

TIA...

Mike.

Hi Mike,

Check to see if the IIS mapping for ASPX is enabled. To do so, go to IIS
Manager, go to the Properties of the Default Web Site. On the Home
Directory tab, click Configurations. On the APP mappings tab, make sure
ASPX is listed. Also, select ASPX and click Edit button. Make sure "check
the file exists" option is NOT selected.

For each of your existing ASP .NET application under "Default Website",
please also do the same thing.

Bradley Jiang
