Problem looking for downloads in VS.Net2003 Brad
9/29/2003 5:49:39 PM
visual studio .net setup:
Selecting Start Page - Online Resources - Downloads produces the message:
"This feature requires that you have connected to the internet
previously or are currently online"

- VS.Net2003 running on win2003 server
- I am currently connected to the internet...IE 6 is working fine with
internet connection
- I am behind a corporate firewall with no restrictions on where I can
browse
- ICF is disabled
- IE enhanced security is disabled
- Virus Scan enabled/disabled makes no difference
- Reboot makes no difference
- Repair of Vs.Net makes no difference

On my XP Pro box "downloads works" with no problem. What else could I check
on my win2003 server box?

Thanks

Brad

Hi Brad,
For first thing to check, please do the following :

1) Open VS.NET
2) Go to Tools/Options
3) Select Web Browser
4) Click Internet Explorer options...
5) Click Languages button
6) Make sure that they have some language in there, for example,English(US).

Second thing to check :
1) Launch VS
2) Show Start Page
3) Select "What's New" tab
4) make sure filter is set to (none) in the "What's New" page. If not set
to (none), change it to (none) and refresh page.

Justine -
Thanks for your response. Checked info per your suggestions but am still
having the problems with the "Downloads". Here is what I found from what
you asked me to check:

First - Language was already set to "English (United States) [en-us]

Second - The "What's New" page works fine with or without a filter.
It's just the "Downloads"

I tried completely removing vsnet and reinstalling with no success. Next
suggestions?

Brad,
The following information is for your reference:
1) If you have Zone Alarm, please shut it down.
2)Click "start", and then click "run"
In the "open" box, type"regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\msxml.dll", and then
click "ok".
In the "open" box, type"regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\msxml3.dll", and then
click "ok".
Let me know whether the methods help resolve the issue or not.

Not using Zone Alarm.

Registering dll's did not resolve.

Just to restate: All of the other links work fine "Online Community"
"Headlines" "Search Online" etc....

Brad,

This problem can occur in some corporate environments where users must
authenticate against a proxy server in order to access the Internet. To
resolve the issue:

a. Start the Visual Studio .NET 2003 IDE
b. On the View menu, click Web Browser --> Home
c. A prompt for authentication should appear. Provide a valid
username and password.

Justine,
As I mentioned in my earlier emails: I am conntecting to the internet with
no problem and I'm already logged into our firewall before vsnet. You are
correct that I will get a firewall login prompt if I access links and I am
not yet logged into the firewall.....this much I already knew and expected.

Now to add to this: when I started this thread, only the "Downloads" link
produced the message....and at this writing the "XML Web Services" and "Web
Hosting" now produce the same message.

The other links on the "Online Resources" still work fine i.e. if I click
on Online Resources - Online Community, Code Project, the vsnet internal
browser takes me to the Code Project sight.

These links I can do without.....what always concerns me is that something
simple like this could be a symptom of a bigger problem.

Justine: See my email from earlier today below. The link I reported as
working today "Online Resources - Online Community" has now stopped
working. It too produces the error:
"This feature requires that you have connected to the internet previously or
are currently online:

It's as if something is getting corrupt or a setting is stuck or caching is
not reset...or, dare I say, a bug in the logic for handling the link.

Brad,

Now I'm able to reproduce the issue on my side.
1. Open VS .net, show the Start Page
2. Set the filter to ".net framework SDK"
3. Close the Start Page
4. Restart the VS .net
5. Click Download or Online Community or any other links
And it will display the message that "This feature requires you have
connected to the internet previously or are currently online".

I found that this is a known issue. But there's no report by now that
indicates this problem will be a symptom of a bigger problem.
Thank you very much for your feedback. If you have any new finding, please
don't hesitate to let me know.

Have a nice day!

Brad,

I appreciate your feedback very much.
I'm afraid the issue is still under research on our side therefore the KB
article will be published in the near future. Please pay close attention to
the knowledge base.
Have a nice weekend!
