Computer goes slow half way through install

Computer goes slow half way through install Dan Walker

visual studio .net setup: My machine, AMD2000, 512Mb ram, 64Mb GeForce4, 34Gb free HD, virtually dies
half way through the install of VS.net.

I have tried a few times to install but get the same problem every time. I
have disabled all programs that are not needed and it still does this.

I have had task manager running while installing and noticed that msiexec
takes about 58Mb of ram happily all the way through the install until the
point where my machine goes extremely slow. Also, on the physical memory
side, there is always about 95 to 130Mb free until the same point when it
goes down to about 700k free!! And the processor goes to 100% while through
the working part of the install the processor is about 25-40%.

This is quite worrying as my PC is fine apart from this.

It does this strange behavior during CD1 install of common components to the
system. During this happening, task manager does not report it as a 'Not
Repsonding' program but the system takes about a minute or so to move the
task manager window for instance.

In my error logs in event manager, there is nothing. In the setup error logs
there is nothing.

I have tried with and without IIS installed. I do not run zone alarm or
other firewall as i have a hardware one outside the PC.

I have tried the install about 8 times, even left it overnight and it was
still trying to copy the same file!!

During the hanging(??) part of the install, it uses the virtual memory lots
but only reports a small usage (the drive that is on is flashing lots)

Now, when i try to run install, it detects a bad install from previous
tries. I remove that then it will try again. If I remove that then wait for
5 minutes, it detects the bad install again and 'pretents' to remove it. It
does this even after removal then reboot.

I am a techy (networking and software stuff) and cannot see anything that
maybe causing this, hence why i would like to ask better cleverer people
like yourselves!

Thanks
Dan

To solve the issue related to trying to uninstall a failed install please
read the information in the Knowledge Base article at:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;256986

One thing that could be making setup slow is a virus scanner. Have you
disabled all virus scanners running on your system? Try disabling them and
then re-running setup.
