Hello: I am consistently getting a 1603 error installing Visual Studio .Net 2003 Enterprise Architect (from MSDN). I did numerous web searches and Google groups searches for this particular error (1603 followed by a 3). Following this I copied the installation files from CD to the hard drive, and had no errors in the copy, to validate that my image was good. I removed .Net 2002, the DDK (most recent version), FrontPage 2003, Outlook 2000. I got an error removing the .Net 2002, so I followed the instructions in KB article 312383 and 320114 to forcefully remove everything. I stopped all services I could that were optional. I uninstalled my virus scanner. I have the platform SDK October 2002 installed, but I could not remove that - after trying to remove the Windows Installer SDK, version 2.0, I got the same 1603 error, although the installer SDK has a blue check mark next to it - the IIS SDK version 5.1 is next and is not checked, so I"m not sure if the error happened before or after the INstaller SDK. The Installer SDK shows up the next time I try to remove it so I think the error occured there. So I used MSIZAP to remove THOSE. I tried unchecking EVERYTHING but VC++, and the libraries (not even the VS tools) and I still have the same error. Windows component update went fine, no issues. I'm at my wits end! I have a fair amount of other software on the machine so I really don't want to do an O/S reinstall. I've had every copy of the Windows SDK since 1.03, and the C compiler from version 3+; This shouldn't be this hard. Does anyone have an idea? Hi John, Thanks for posting. Hi John, Is there any update on this issue? Please feel free to post here. Regards, Felix Wang Microsoft Online Partner Support Get Secure! - www.microsoft.com/security This posting is provided "as is" with no warranties and confers no rights.
Wow, that's strange I thought I did reply. Your suggestion did not help - I still have the same problem. My company name only had a comma in it anyway, but I did follow the article suggestion to change it to see if it would help. It did not. == John == [quoted text, click to view] "Felix Wang" <v-felwa@online.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:0fS1dM#DEHA.2300@cpmsftngxa06.phx.gbl... > Hi John, > > Is there any update on this issue? Hi John, In addition to checking the Company Name, let's also check whether we have a share for the "wwwroot" folder: If you are using Windows XP, please follow the article below to disable "simple file sharing" first: How to disable simplified sharing and set permissions on a shared folder in Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/?id=307874 Then , let's work with the "wwwroot$" share: 1. Goto Start|Settings|Control Panel|Administrative Tools|Computer Management. 2. Expand Shared Folders and click on Shares. 3. Under the Action menu select the option to add a New File Share.. 4. In the Create Shared Folder wizard browse to the [drive]:\Inetpub\wwwroot folder. 5. In the Share Name: box enter wwwroot$ 6. Optional: enter a Share description. 7. Click Next and you will go to a window asking for share and folder permissions. Select Custom permissions and add the Administrators and VS Developers group. Give both full control. Please give it a try and see whether this helps or not. This is the weirdest thing, some of my replies are getting trashed. I might be sending them direct insted of CC'ing the group. Nope, turns out Outlook Express ignores the 'send every 5 minutes' sometimes for some odd reason. I did all that, I even uninstalled IIS as a test (I was able to install on another XP machine with just the VC++ portions without IIS). It still doesn't install, same error log. I posted portions of the error log earlier, do you need the whole thing? == JOhn == [quoted text, click to view] "Felix Wang" <v-felwa@online.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:xwt1wtNEEHA.3968@cpmsftngxa06.phx.gbl... > Hi John, > > In addition to checking the Company Name, let's also check whether we have > a share for the "wwwroot" folder: > > If you are using Windows XP, please follow the article below to disable > "simple file sharing" first: > > How to disable simplified sharing and set permissions on a shared folder in > Windows XP > http://support.microsoft.com/?id=307874 > > Then , let's work with the "wwwroot$" share: > 1. Hi John, Have you tried the installation under clean boot? How to Perform a Clean Boot in Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/?id=310353 In addition, have you tried cleaning the %TEMP% folder? How large is the log file? Regards, Felix Wang Microsoft Online Partner Support Get Secure! - www.microsoft.com/security This posting is provided "as is" with no warranties and confers no rights.
Yes, of course, that was one of the steps in the KB's I followed as I noted in my original email. I did retry it again and got the same EXACT results and the same EXACT error. The error log is 9 Meg. I already cut and pasted the portions of it in the main message that delt with errors. I am attaching the other two logs. If you want the whole log let me know where I can upload it. Why can't you look at the log excerpts I posted almost a month ago and work from there? I tried to post a 98K vinstall71.txt and a 1.2kb vserror71.txt but the server says it's too large, Ididn't notice it didn't post. == John == [quoted text, click to view] "Felix Wang" <v-felwa@online.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:MJ4RomJGEHA.2308@cpmsftngxa06.phx.gbl... > Hi John, > > Have you tried the installation under clean boot? > > How to Perform a Clean Boot in Windows XP > http://support.microsoft.com/?id=310353 > > In addition, have you tried cleaning the %TEMP% folder? Hi John, I am sorry to hear the problem still exist. I have already done some research on the log you have posted. However, I am not very clear about the logs. There seem to be 2 separate errors here: IHxRegisterSession::CreateTransaction() returned 8004036e. BeginTransaction() ERROR: Attempt failed because another transaction was running. Trying to Rollback current transaction ({E05F0409-0E9A-48A1-AC04-E35E3033604A}) IHxRegisterSession::ContinueTransaction() returned 80004005. BeginTransaction() ERROR: Could not restart current transaction. BeginTransaction() ERROR: Could not Rollback current transaction. HelpFile registration will abort. Registration session {E05F0409-0E9A-48A1-AC04-E35E3033604A} was *not* created.Action ended 19:18:41: InstallFinalize. Return value 3. and ***ERRORLOG EVENT*** : ISetupComponent::Pre/Post/Install() failed in ISetupManager::InstallManagerHelper()[03/15/04,16:36:06] setup.exe: ***ERRORLOG EVENT*** : Component error string not specified in ISetupManager::AddToActionResultCollection() As a result, I thought reading the MSI log directly might be necessary. I have another suggestion. Please look for the file "*.lck" (e.g. "Rgstrtn.lck") on your machine. The file is likely a hidden file and under the following folders: %appdata%\Microsoft Help %temp% \Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft Help If we can locate the file, please copy it to another folder for backup and remove it. Also, please see if ANY directories exist under "%APPDATA%\Microsoft Help" or "\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft Help", they need to be moved to another directory, a rename to another name will not work. Please give it a try and see whether this helps or not. THAT got it. It was the 'all users' directory. This is very frustrating, there should be a FAQ on this on the support site, and the installer really shouldn't just fault on this with such a poor error message. == John ==
Hi John, Thanks for your update. I am glad to hear that the issue has been fixed. I agree with you that the issue is a little bit weird.
