I want to install vs.net 2003 on the virtual machine, however the prerequisites installation fails, neither the .NET framework nor the J++ runtime will instal
Any ideas

Reading your problem description it would be nice to know what exactly fails to be installed more than the .net fmw and j++

- Have you run the Windows Update lately
- Enabled IIS on the VP
- Disabled all Anti Virus software etc

You can start the installation from the Prereq/WCU CD directly

In answer to your questions, the VM XP was SP1a from the MSDN disks, fully updated from Windows update. IIS was not installed, and the AV was not disabled, although I have not found this a problem in the past (on real machines). The Symantec AV is corporate and locked down, so in theory I can't kill it
I created a new VM using the same disk, fully updated, but without Cisco or Symantec and installed the IIS and Front page extensions. VS studio .NET 2003 installed without a problem. I don't think the AV gets in the way, so maybe its the Cisco VPN
