visual studio .net setup:
hi All,

Could anyone confirm that I only need Visual Studio .Net Professional and
*NOT* Enterprise Architect to allow me to edit/create Stored Procedures on a
SQL Server 2000 database?

Cheers!
Kyle

"Visual Database Tools
Design stored procedures, indexes, tables, triggers, user-defined functions,
and other database elements visually. In Visual Studio .NET Professional,
these design capabilities are limited to the SQL Server Desktop Engine."

If you don't want to get Enterprise Architect, you might consider Microsoft
SQL Server Web Data Administrator (Free). It can be found at:
http://snipurl.com/4w25

Snipped:
------------------------------
The SQL Server Web Data Administrator enables you to easily manage your SQL
Server data, wherever you are. Using its built-in features, you can do the
following from Microsoft Internet Explorer or your favorite Web browser:

-Create and edit databases in SQL Server 2000 or Microsoft SQL Server 2000
Desktop Engine (MSDE 2000)
-Perform ad-hoc queries against databases and save them to your file system
-Export and import database schema and data
-Manage users and roles
-View, create and edit stored procedures

Whether you are doing Microsoft Windows or Web development, or just need
remote access to data for yourself or your clients, the Web Data
Administrator is the perfect complement to your toolbox.

Sam

When I follow this link

More&SU=http://msdn.microsoft.com/howtobuy/vstudio/
I see the page you're referring to, but not the text. I see

Visual Database Tools
Integrated database design tools provide Oracle, SQL Server, and other
database users with a visual view of their schema and lets them add, modify,
or remove tables, columns, indexes, views, stored procedures, and other
database objects.

which seems to imply it will work with any SQL Server version, however I'm
finding this does to appear to be true. I just purchaced this version (2003
Pro) which came bundled with Sql Server 2K developer. I'm confused, because
I seem to be hearing (from at least 2 sources now) that the data tools only
work with MSDE, not the version of SQL Server 2K that comes bundled with the
IDE. Understandably, I'm a bit annoyed. I would have hoped they had QA'd
issues like that before distributing an $800 application.

Before I break down and use MSDE, the last time I worked with it It was the
Sql Server 7.0 engine, can anybody confirm if it still uses that engine, or
has it been upgraded to 2K? I suppose I could just use Query Analyzer
instead... blech!

Cheers,

Justin
