I was able to resolve this problem myself; hopefully this can help others...
Carefully examine the .dll files (assemblies) in C:\WINDOWS\assembly, and
uninstall dups that belong to prior beta/ctp installs. You'll have to right
click to get the exact build number, and don't uninstall 1.0/1.1 stuff. I
don't know which ones specifically resolved my problem, but now XML
viewing/editing works fine for me now.
