visual studio .net setup : Can't repair/reinstall VS .NET 2003 Pro - weird problem

Visual Studio .NET Professional 2003 on Windows XP Pro SP2.

I decided that I needed to repair/reinstall VS because when I ran it, the
IDE closed down immediately without any error messages. However I am unable
to repair/reinstall because when I insert the VS Disc 1, and click on Option
2 Visual Studio .NET "You are now ready to install Visual Studio .NET", it
fires up Creative Surround Mixer and the Setup screen exits!

I then used msconfig to set Diagnostic Startup with just Windows Installer
selected on the Services tab and tried again. However the result is
basically the same - "Surround Mixer - Unable to detect any SoundBlaster
series of soundcards. The application will exit" - because the Creative
drivers/services haven't been loaded.

I then followed the article "How to remove Visual Studio .NET 2003" at:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;824642

but got the same problem with Creative Surround Mixer when it came to Step
10 - Install Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003.

I then followed the instructions written by Mark Smith at:

http://groups.google.co.uk/groups?hl=en&lr=&selm=6QMlbPUOEHA.3800%40cpmsftngxa10.phx.gbl

All the steps up to and including "Perform Repair Installation of the .NET
Framework 1.1" were successful. However running the vs_setup.msi command in
the next step, "Perform Repair Installation of Visual Studio .NET 2003
Professional", resulted in the prompt "To install this product, please run
Setup.exe. For other installation options, see the Installation section of
ReadMe.htm". I therefore ran Setup.exe on the VS Disc 1, clicked Option 2
and got the same Surround Mixer error as above.

So I am completely stuck, unable to reinstall or repair VS.

Any help or advice to fix this problem would be much appreciated! Thanks.

I found the following posted elsewhere, which *may* be of help to you:

<quote>
Seems that Windows is running what is defined in App Paths for "setup.exe"
Judging by the error that you are getting, Windows is running
<system32>\setup.exe instead of the setup.exe from the CD.

Open regedit and navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App
Paths\Setup.exe

Double click on the default value and clear the value data. It should now
be blank. This should clear up your problem and allow you to install VS.

Your situation sounded somewhat similar...

I've fixed the problem, thanks to an earlier post from Kirt White:
