Is it safe to do a side by side of Feb CTP of VS 2005 and 2003?
Ideally I would use a virtual machine, but my machine only
has a one
gig of RAM. I suspect even the simple exploratory work I
want to with
the CTP will grind me to halt.

So is a side by side install safe?

I already asked this on the Whidbey groups and got no reply.

No its not.

A gig of RAM is correct (I give my VMWare session 768mb of RAM) for
experimentation.

I guess I don't see why "only one Gig of RAM" would be a problem.
I have a PC here with 1 Gig RAM happily running VPC 2004 with Win XP and
VS2005 Beta 1. I have not done anything extensive, but doing demo apps has
not been a problem.
As you've already been told, installing any beta or CTP software on a
production machine is discouraged because of the risks involved.
