visual studio .net setup : how to create components in my own setup.msi?

How can I create Setup projects that contain multiple components a user can
choose of with the Visual Installer Tool of Visual Studio.NET 2003?

Do I really have to buy ridiculous expensive things like installshield,
because it is not in there?

thanks

You can use a ridiclously cheap tool like Wi:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/wix/

or some of the others here:

yes, this sounds really interesting, although I haven't found a good editor,
but decompiling the msi I've made with VS.Net and modifying with an XML
editor is a possible solution to my problem.

Thanks for that link.

I apologize for 'ridiculous' but actually I was just plain astonished about
the pricing.
Anyway, thanks for the links and I also think about buying your book.

So far as I know Windows Installer SDK provides functions to add components
into a msi package. You can learn more from following page:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/msi/setup/w
indows_installer_start_page.asp
And if you met any problem with Windows Installer SDK, you can post
questions to microsoft.public.platformsdk.msi for proper help.

PS: this group is for questions on installing Visual Studio .Net, if you
have questions in this nature, please feel free to post them here
