I down loaded vs.net 2003 from msdn and I enter the setup. The Prereq step
says I need to load something? I select step one as it is the only choice. An
error messages pops up and says "Invalid command-line argument." I click
"OK" and all windows go away. I'm at step one. I really thought I would get a
little farther. Anyone got any ideas??? I have tried the full load file as
well as down loading all three cd iso files. Writing them to cd and using
the auto start. I also tried using isobuster and installing from there. Same

I am trying to install the Enterprise edition. I have downloaded the Prereq
cd as well. I tried to start the "setup" from the prereq cd, it said I needed
to start from cd 1. Which I retried.
I have 7 cd's in all from the iso folder, 1 prereq cd, 2 developer cd's, 3
msdn lib cd's and a source safe cd. I also down loaded the full install cd
from the full install folder.

Which edition?
*If* what you have is CD's 1 and 2, plus the Prerequisites CD from the
Professional Edition, you need to insert the Prerequisites CD when prompted
to do so. If you didn't download the Prerequisites ISO, you need that to
proceed with the install (for any edition).
Exactly what three ISO's did you download?

From your description, I think the step1 you reminded is "Visual Studio.Net
Prerequisites". Have you seen the dialog "web project requirements" after
you click the "Visual Studio.Net Prerequisites"? If not, you may try
following instructions to finish the Microsoft Visual Studio .NET
Prerequisites installation. And then you could go step2 to start installing
visual studio.

Microsoft Visual Studio .NET Prerequisites
Web Project Requirements for Windows XP
If you want to create Web projects on this machine, you must first install
additional components. To create Web projects, both Internet Information
Services (IIS) and FrontPage Server Extensions (FPSE) must be installed and
configured. You can, however, create Web projects on remote machines that
have these components installed and configured.

Note: It is recommended that you print or bookmark this page before
installing the components listed below. This page does not automatically
display after a machine restart.

Securing Your Machine for Installation

Securing Your Machine for Installation on Windows XP
Download and save the latest security updates from
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/security/ to your desktop.
Note: Do not install the security updates now. You will be manually
applying these security updates in a later stage of the instructions below.
If you have problems, please see your system administrator.
Obtain your Windows operating system CD/DVD.
Note: Please contact your system administrator if you installed the Windows
operating system over the network and you do not have the Windows operating
system CD/DVD readily available.
Disconnect your machine from ALL network connections.
Note: If you do not disconnect, your machine could be susceptible to
viruses between installing the components and applying the latest security
updates.
Remove the Visual Studio CD/DVD from your machine now.

I am sure it is the PC I'm installing on. I used the same CD's to temporarily
install on different PC's. No problems. I then forced the pre-req's to
install on the PC I am having problems with. They installed. I then put cd1
back in and tried to install. Step 1 was by-passed and step two (install
vs.net) failed the same way. "invalid command-line argument". There is
something in this pc that is set incorrectly for the install program to work.
I will compare environment with other pc's.
thanks all.

Thanks for your update.
I notice you can successful installed the pre- from cd but get "invalid
command-line argument" when clicking the options from Visual Studio.net
Setup dialog. I looks like a path error for this dialog, I suggest you
clicking the setup.exe from the CD directly and let me know if you could
install it successfully.

I tried this and the setup started and I thought I had it made until I got an
error message stating the process could not find a file needed for the
install to continue. I could not locate the file either using "search". I
think I will just forget about using that PC and use my lap top for now. I
need to look at the environment a little closer and compare with one that
works. I have a couple extra hard drives on the PC that vs.net won't install
on and there might be a path problem there????? Thanks for the help. I might
be reposting if I try to load again and have the same problems.
