I have Windows XP Pro with SP2 installed on a new notebook. A totally
new install of the OS with drivers and other updates from
windowsupdate.com.

Problem - I put in the Visual Studio .Net installation disk and
*absolutely*nothing*happens*! If I doubleclick on autorun.exe, I see
it start in the task manager and it almost immediately quits. No
errors, nothing in the event log, absolutely no additional information
can be gotten from the program. I'm at a brick wall on this one.

Oh - one other thing. I don't have the ability to load this without
SP2. It seems that the XP Gold hardware detection routines have a
problem with the ACPI bios on this machine so it just hangs at startup
if I try to do an installation pre-sp2. So there's no use in
suggesting that I uninstall SP2 - it can't be done(believe me - I've
spent 4 days on this).

Any ideas? Thanks.

Ok - I'm an idiot.

This is what happens when you don't read the label on the disk very
carefully and you put disk2 into the drive instead of disk 1.

I hope this note here helps someone else. (and I hope it gets to MS's
dev team to put some F**#@!& error messages in their autorun.exe file).
