Hi,
I am starting to lean vs.net and are going to develop a database. I am just
thinking what environment should I use, Win XP pro or Server 2003?

Thanks,

Jeffrey Shi

It depends. Are you talking about the development environment or the
environment the finished product will run in? You also don't mention whether
it's a web or Windows app.
What is the primary use of the PC where you intend to install Visual Studio?
As this is typically a developers workstation, there is no particular
advantage to running a server OS.
Will you need to use SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition for the database,
and will it be on the same PC as VS? The Enterprise Edition requires a
server OS, but if MSDE or the Developer Edition of SQL Server will do, they
will run happily on XP.

If this is a simple project for learning, just stick with whatever OS you
are using. Either you mention will work.

Thanks Peter & Rhett, Sorry I didn't make my question to be clear.
Basically, I am talking about the development environment but the finished
product will be running on my client server environment. The application
will be web based. I am using my notebook to do the development that is
running Windows XP Pro. That was the question came from, should I stay with
XP or should I format my hard drive and install Windows 2003 server on my
notebook. Will the database developed on my notebook be easily to transfer
to my client server environment?

Hi Jeffrey,
I agree with the answer from Peter.

Generally speaking, if you want to develop and deploy the database on a same machine, we suggest Windows server 2003. And if you just develop it, you can choose
either of them.

If you have enviroment to deloy the database, it is ok to develop it "anywhere".
Here is a good article on [HOW TO: Move Databases Between Computers That Are Running SQL Server], you may
reference it after you complete the development.

In addition, here is another article on using the WITH MOVE option with the RESTORE Statement, I think it may be helpful to
you in your database development. You can get it at:

Thanks for the links, Rhett!
Very useful for the education environment as well.
