visual studio .net setup : vs.net 2003 fails to open project with unhandled VSW exception filter

Hello,

I installed Visual Studio .Net 2003 (yes, 2003...not 2005. I know I'm
behind, but that's where I am.), and was using it to create a Visual
Basic application for about a month without any difficulties. Then
suddenly last Friday, when I open my project, it crashes with this
error message:

An unhandled exception has been caught by the VSW exception filter.

It claims to originate from Kernel32.dll. Although, I don't know how
this low level DLL could be causing a problem and it is affecting only
Visual Studio.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times both with and
without the vs.net 2003 SP1 patch, but it always crashes when I open my
project.

Searching these forums and the rest of the web, I can see that many
other people have had a similar problem, but I can't see that anyone
has posted a solution, except for a single posting by a Microsoft
Engineer, http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/814731. This
posting suggests that Visual Studio cannot be installed when McAfee
Antivirus is running. I'm not running McAfee, but I turned off Norton
Antivirus and reinstalled. It still fails in exactly the same way.

Thank you for your help,
Randy Stegbauer
