multiple installations of VS possible? julie

visual studio .net setup: Hi--I am new to this, so if I am in the wrong discussion group, I apologize.

I have VS .net framework 1.0 installed on my c:\.

my question: If I want to install framework 2.0 (to be able to use the
treelist control),

do I need to uninstall 1.0, then install 2.0,

or can I run both versions on the same machine?
thank you,

You can have all three versions of the .NET Framework installed on the same
machine. They install as separate products. You can also have all three
versions of Visual Studio (VS.NET 2002, VS.NET 2003 and VS 2005) on the same
machine.
Now, you didn't ask this question, but your comment about the .NET Framework
v2.0 TreeList control, hints at it.
I don't know which version of Visual Studio you have (guessing 2002), but
simply installing newer versions of the .NET Framework will not allow them
to be used with an older version of Visual Studio. So, if you want the
features in .NET Framework 2.0, you'll need VS 2005, or one of the free
Express Editions available here:

Peter:
thank you for your thorough answer.
thanks also for clarifying that even though one can install them, one can
only USE
the latest one!

I would have never thought to ask that!!

If I were an English teacher, I would require my students to post
questions here--just for the practice of asking specifically what you need to
know!!
cheers,

I really hate to admit this after your kind comments, but I've obviously not
made myself clear.

As regards the use of different .NET Framework versions, it is the version
of Visual Studio that drives which Framework version applies:

Visual Studio .NET 2002 uses .NET Framework v 1.0
Visual Studio .NET 2003 uses .NET Framework v 1.1
Visual Studio 2005 (including the free Express editions) uses .NET Framework
v2.0

In other words, even if you were to install v2.0 of the .NET Framework,
older versions of Visual Studio (2002 and 2003) will not use it.

pvdg4,

Is it possible to install VS 2005 Professional AND VS2005 Team Developer
versions? The reason I ask is because the first CDs I was given before my
MSDN subscription was purchased was for the Pro edition. Now, my
subscription level is different. I have started a project with the pro
version, but dont want to delete VS Pro until I have the new Team Ed working.
Can I install both?
