visual studio .net setup : Problem installing MSDN Library

Michael G. Schneider
7/13/2006 12:00:00 AM
On a new PC with Windows XP SP 2 German, I installed Visual Studio 2005 Team
Edition for Software Developers from April 2006 (Disc 3192.1). Then I tried
to install MSDN Library for Visual Studio 2005 from July 2006 (Disc 3619).
The installation starts and then prompts me...

"Enter the disc: Visual Studio 2005 DVD" (translated from German)

If I then insert the first DVD (Disc 3192.1), nothing happens. The message
box stays on the screen. Clicking OK simply refreshes the message box.

Hi Michael,

Thank you posting!

[quoted text, click to view]

Based on the above description, I understand the situation is after you
install the Visual Studio 2005 Team Edition for Software Developers on a
Windows XP SP 2 German system, then you do not install the MSDN for Visual
Studio 2005 from the VSTD 2005 setup program (step 2 of that setup
program), instead, you attempted to install MSDN Library for Visual Studio
2005 from July 2006 (another MSDN subscription Disc 3619) directly. Please
correct me if misunderstood any thing.

If you really neglect the step 2 to install MSDN for Visual Studio 2005
from the VSTD 20005 setup program, I suggest you complete it first. It will
install the MSDN which integrated with your VS2005, then install the MSDN
Library for Visual Studio 2005 from July 2006 to update it.

Thanks!

Hello Gary,

thanks a lot for the answer.

[quoted text, click to view]

I did not describe the process completely. I should have said that I
installed anything from the "Visual Studio 2005 Team Edition for Software
Developers" - that is the "Visual Studio 2005", the "MSDN product
documentation" from that month, and the "search for Service Releases". Then
I changed the DVD and tried to update the MSDN with July 2006.

Hi Michael,

Thanks for the quick response!

Considering that you have already installed the MSDN with the VSTD 2005
product and the prompt message box still exists after you insert your VSTD
2005 product DVD, then the problem should be one of the following:

1. The setup program of MSDN for Visual Studio 2005 (from July 2006) cannot
recognize your inserted VS2005 DVD. Is it possible that your VSTD2005 DVD
has been damaged?

2. The version of Visual Studio 2005 Team Edition for Software Developers
DVD is not compatible with the July 2006's MSDN for Visual Studio 2005. The
new MSDN for Visual Studio 2005 cannot update the VSTD's integrated MSDN.

Thanks!

Hello Gary,

thank's a lot for your answer.

[quoted text, click to view]

No it is not damaged. I installed the Visual Studio from it. Moreover, I
just copied the entire contents to the hard disk - no problems at all.

This should be a well known error. And it should be reproducable. Did you
hear of it before?

Is this checking for the DVD some sort of copy protection, or does the
installation really need some files from the DVD? What happens, if I
uninstall anything from Visual Studio, copy the Visual Studio DVD to some
hard disk and install from there. Will the installation of the July MSDN
also demand me to insert the physical DVD?

The message box is simply a "please insert DVD with an OK and Cancel
button". It is not a file-open dialog, which might be pointed to some hard
disk or a network share.

Hello Gary,

I succeded by performing...

- uninstall Visual Studio completely
- copy both DVDs to the hard disk
- install Visual Studio
- install MSDN April 2006
- install MSDN July 2006

There was no "please insert DVD" message. Anything seems to be ok now.

Thanks for your help,

Michael G. Schneider

You are very welcome, Michael!

I am glad to know you have already fixed this problem, it seems to be a
setup program's problem, I will forward it to our corrsponding product team
for review. Thanks for you sharing this useful experience with us. :)

Have a nice day!

Hello,

I found the same problem on my installation now. The Update of MSDN Juli
2006 does not work - German language - The symptoms are the same as Michael
G. Schneider said before.............. this is really a bug I think.

With regards
Hape
